Event Details

This class is perfect for folks who can confidently operate a sewing machine & want to utilize those skills to make a garment to add to their wardrobe. If you’ve never sewn from a pattern before (or have but still want guidance), this class will be a great introduction to choosing your size, following the instructions, fitting as you go, and adding more details for more experienced sewists. All you need to provide is the fabric; we’ll cover everything else!

Week 1: Taking Measurements and Choosing Fabrics

• Take measurements to choose the best size for your body
• See how to cut your desired size out of the pattern
• Learn how to cut sewing patterns onto fabric
• Share what fabric(s) you plan to use for your pants

HOMEWORK: CUT OUT YOUR PANTS FROM YOUR CHOSEN FABRIC

Week 2: Sewing the Legs and Pockets

• Assemble the leg pieces of the pants together
• With guidance, make any adjustments needed to ensure your pants fit properly

Week 3: Sewing the Waistband

• Assemble the waistband
• Attach the waistband to the pants

Week 4: Sewing the Finishing Touches

• Make any final adjustments
• Add any finishing touches needed to finish your first pair of pants

By the end of this course, you’ll have a pair of pants that you made and fit the way you want them to fit!

This course will run with a minimum of 4 students and is capped at 8 students.

Workshop registrations are non-refundable. Please double-check your schedule before signing up to ensure you are available on all dates that we meet. If you need to miss a class, please note that missed sessions cannot be made up or refunded.

LOCATION & ACCESSIBILITY:

The Slow Fashion Academy studio is located in Firehouse Arts Germantown, 5231 Germantown Avenue, B06, Philadelphia, PA 19144 (United States).

To enter the building, dial 0-6-bell on the keypad to the left of the door and we will buzz you in.

There is plenty of free street parking along Germantown Avenue, and the 23 SEPTA bus stops right in front of the building at the corner of Germantown Ave. and Bringhurst St. There is also a bike rack in front of Tipsy Cafe, next door. We are a half-mile walk from the Wister stop on SEPTA regional rail.

The studio is on the basement level of the building, down a flight of stairs. Unfortunately, we are not wheelchair accessible.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

Week 1: Bring 4 yards of the fabric you plan to make your pants with. Recommended fabrics to use include: linen, chambray, cotton twill/polyester twill, canvas, denim, tencel, hemp, and other medium-weight woven fabrics. Please avoid lightweight and/or stretchy fabrics.

Weeks 2-4: Bring cut fabric pieces of your pants to work on

Basic supplies (thread, needles, 1.25” elastic, etc.), a PDF of the sewing pattern, and access to sewing machines are included in your workshop fee.

CAN I BRING MY OWN SEWING MACHINE?

Yes! In fact, we encourage it—especially if you want to practice at home between classes. If you bring your own machine, please arrive 5-10 minutes early to set it up, and ensure you have all necessary parts (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin case, needle plate, etc.). Your machine should be in good working order.

If we encounter issues during setup, we’ll ask that you switch to one of the studio machines so we can make the most of our class time together.
