*About the Garden Stays:

We are licensing the Garden Stays pattern from Atelier Arden for this class. We’ve chosen this pattern because of its extensive size range (29.1″-64.2″ bust) and customizable details.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE THE PATTERN! Each student will receive a personal printed A0 copy and instruction booklet on the first day of class.

Choose from the available dates below:

*We will host a Zoom call on Monday, Sept 21 from 6-6:45 pm to go over how to take measurements for this style of garment, and determine your size. A link will be sent in the email confirmation as soon as you register for the class. If you aren’t able to attend this call, you can email us your full bust/chest and waist measurements so we can order a printed pattern in your size.

Event Details

This course is perfect for intermediate sewists who want to tackle more advanced techniques like boning or anyone who wants cute stays for the Ren Faire, Halloween, or drag/burlesque. Over two 4-hour sessions, you’ll create beautiful, body hugging stays that are sure to impress.

Day 1: Cutting, Fusing, and Marking
Cut and assemble the outer shell and lining. By the end of day 1, you’ll be ready to insert boning!

Day 2: Boning, Binding, Grommets, and Lacing
You’ll add the finishing touches to your stays and can make a set of shoulder straps if time allows.

By the end of this weekend, you’ll walk away with completed stays.

LOCATION & ACCESSIBILITY:

The Slow Fashion Academy studio is located in Firehouse Arts Germantown, 5231 Germantown Avenue, B06, Philadelphia, PA 19144 (United States).

To enter the building, dial 0-6-bell on the keypad to the left of the door and we will buzz you in.

There is plenty of free street parking along Germantown Avenue, and the 23 SEPTA bus stops right in front of the building at the corner of Germantown Ave. and Bringhurst St. There is also a bike rack in front of Tipsy Cafe, next door. We are a half-mile walk from the Wister stop on SEPTA regional rail.

The studio is on the basement level of the building, down a flight of stairs. Unfortunately, we are not wheelchair accessible.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

  • 1.5 yds each of exterior and lining fabrics (and thread to match, if particular)
  • 5 yds of 1/4″-1/2″ wide ribbon for lacing
  • I 3-yd package of single-fold bias binding for the bottom edge

The following materials are provided:

  • A0 printed pattern and instructions
  • Buckram interfacing
  • Boning
  • Grommets and use of our grommet press
  • Thread and sewing supplies

CAN I BRING MY OWN SEWING MACHINE?

Yes! In fact, we encourage it—especially if you want to practice at home between classes. If you bring your own machine, please arrive 5-10 minutes early to set it up, and ensure you have all necessary parts (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin case, needle plate, etc.). Your machine should be in good working order.

If we encounter issues during setup, we’ll ask that you switch to one of the studio machines so we can make the most of our class time together.
